CAN GLOBAL WARMING WIPE OUT AN ENTIRE COUNTRY? (Click for answer) Print

The country of Maldives is made up of more than 1,000 small islands.  Of the more than 1,000 islands, approximately 200 are inhabited by locals.

Most of the islands are less than 1 meter (just over 3 feet) above sea level.

That means that if the oceans rise more than 1 meter (just over 3 feet), most of the land surface of the islands will be covered by water.

With global warming, the ocean's sea levels are expected to rise between 19 to 59 centimeters (7 to 23 inches) by the end of this century (2100).

Most of the residents of Maldives would have to relocate to another location, since most of the islands would be covered by water, making most of the islands of Maldives uninhabitable.

Therefore, the answer is "yes", global warming can and probably will cause an entire country to disappear or be "wiped out", due to rising sea levels.
