DID HAWAIIANS INVENT THE HAWAIIAN PIZZA? Print

Common sense would tell you that the Hawaiians invented the Hawaiian pizza.  After all, why would it be called that if it wasn't invented by them...and of course, the Hawaiians love their ham and pineapple.

However, as it turns out, Sam Panopoulos, the one-time owner of the Satellite Restaurant in downtown Chatham, Ontario, was the creator of the famous Hawaiian pizza, with the ham and pineapple topping.

According to Panopoulos, "No one made pizza in Chatham prior to that (before he started making pizza in his restaurant).  We would drive to Windsor to order pizza."

On Wikipedia, Sam Panolpoulos is credited with creating the pizza at his restaurant, the "Family Circle" restaurant, but he does set the record straight on this fact.  "It's true that I came up with the idea for Hawaiian pizza but it was at the Satellite restaurant and not at the Family Circle (another restaurant he once owned),'' said Panopoulos.
